2022 USC University of South Carolina Region II Science and Engineering Fair Results

Sixty-six Discovery students competed in the University of South Carolina Region II Science and Engineering Fair on March 11th, 2022. Each of these students did an outstanding job presenting his/her research to the judges from the University of South Carolina and many other professional organizations. Approximately 200 students from area high schools were interviewed by judges to determine the best of the submitted projects. Our Spring Valley students earned 47 awards! Shyam Ganesh Babu (12) and Meghan Pasala (11) were awarded the First Place Male and Female Presidential Awards, respectively, and were recommended to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Atlanta, GA in May. Satvik Nelakuditi (10) was awarded the Second Place Presidential Awards (for males), and Cathy Tang (11) earned the Third Place Presidential Award (for females). Satvik was also invited to attend ISEF in May as an Observer. Please see the complete list of awards that our students earned.  Congratulations to all of our students, their families, and their research teachers, Ms. Heather Alexander, Mrs. Michelle Spigner, and Dr. Michelle Wyatt on their outstanding work!

Theater 2 Play: The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon

Come see the Theater 2 class performance of “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon (One Act)” by Don Zolidis on Friday, April 1st at 7pm. Admission is free! The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon (One Act) features two narrators attempting to recreate all 209 of the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm in a wild, hilarious, fast-paced extravaganza. To make it really interesting, they attempt to link them all together in one gigantic story from Cinderella to Hansel and Gretel to Rumpelstiltskin and Snow White and throwing in some very weird and obscure ones in there like Lean Lisa and Faithful Johannes. Come spend April Fools Day laughing with us!

Premier Princess

Premier Princess is an opportunity for us to create a boutique experience for young ladies in Richland Two that are interested in participating in prom, but may not have the financial means to do so. The goal is to provide a personalized shopping experience that allows them to select a dress, shoes, and accessories for the prom. Students may also receive complimentary prom tickets, beauty services, and gift certificates
to match. Let’s work together to erase the stigma surrounding donations by creating the experience of a lifetime for our deserving students!

We wanted to let all of our families know that we will be experiencing some traffic issues on Sparkleberry Lane in front of the school over the next 2-3 months.  Richland County will be making updates to the gas lines, storm drains, and adding sidewalks.  Work crews will do their best to minimize the impact to arrival and departure times at school.  If you are a car rider or student driver, we strongly encourage you to arrive early to school to make sure you are on time for class.

After School Tutoring

We will offer both on-campus and virtual tutoring options this year.  Offering both platforms allows us to provide more options for students to get academic assistance after school.  Please visit the SVHS Tutoring website for a complete schedule of the tutoring opportunities.

A special thank you goes out to the Spring Valley Education Foundation for funding this important initiative.
