Four Discovery Students Named 2022 Junior Science & Humanities Symposium Finalists

Eighteen Spring Valley Discovery students submitted research papers to the 2022 Department of Defense-sponsored Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS), which took place on January 21, 2022, in a virtual format due to the threat of inclement weather. Based on their written research papers, eleven students were chosen as Semifinalists (marked with asterisks). Semifinalists presented in Sessions I, II, and III for the opportunity to move on to the Finalist round of presentations. Based on their outstanding oral presentations, Aleena Chattha, Eileen Chen, Shriya Kapoor, and Cathy Tang were chosen as Finalists and will compete in person on February 4th, 2022 at the University of South Carolina for the opportunity to attend the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium being held on April 20-24, 2022 in Albuquerque, New Mexico (all expenses paid). Narrowly missing the Finals round, Shyam Ganesh Babu and Madison Han each earned third place in his/her Semifinalist session. In the non-Semifinalist presentation sessions, Sanjana Parise earned first place in Session IV, and Parth Desai and Apurva Mitta earned second and third place, respectively, in Session V. Congratulations to these students and their research teachers—Ms. Lindsey Rega, Mrs. Michelle Spigner, and Dr. Michelle Wyatt.

COVID UPDATE

Richland Two sent out an update for employees and parents with information on the district’s updated isolation and quarantine procedures for schools released by S.C. DHEC on December 31, 2021.  We encourage you to thoroughly review this information by looking at the Covid-19 Update Newsletter. One important point to note in this update is related to students having to quarantine if they are identified as a close contact.  The below statement from this update outlines that if you are 16 years of age or older, you must have the initial vaccination series and the booster to avoid having to quarantine if considered a close contact.  Please review the Covid-19 Update Newsletter for complete details about this and other changes.

  • To avoid quarantine when identified as a close contact you must have received the vaccine doses you’re eligible for (completed initial vaccination series and booster for ages 16 and up, or completed initial vaccination series for ages 5-15).

Questions about your child being Covid-19 positive or is a close contact of someone who is Covid-19 positive, please contact our school nurse Elisabeth Walter at ewalter@richland2.org or by calling the Health Room at ext. 69092

You can participate in Just Socks January by donating a new pair of socks, participating in the Sock Spirit Week, or by sharing this information with other students, family, and friends! Sock donations can be dropped off with Mrs. Reeves in E303 or inside the box in the atrium! All participation is greatly appreciated!
