Spring Valley Celebrates Six National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Spring Valley High School is proud to announce that six of our students have been named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists in the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These exceptional Vikings have demonstrated outstanding academic ability and strong potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Congratulations to our semifinalists:

  • Ella Baker
  • Jacob Carter
  • Broden Hurd
  • Sreeman Parise
  • Ainsley Ropel
  • Colin Tang

They are among approximately 16,000 students nationwide—less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors—who earned this recognition based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

About 95 percent of semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist stage, and nearly half of those finalists will go on to earn a National Merit Scholarship, gaining the title of Merit Scholar®. Scholarships awarded include:

  • 2,500 National Merit® $2500 Scholarships (awarded on a state-representational basis)
  • 950 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards (sponsored by companies and organizations across the country)
  • 3,800 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards (offered by more than 160 colleges and universities to students who enroll at their institutions)

We are incredibly proud of these five students for their hard work and accomplishments. Spring Valley looks forward to cheering them on as they continue in the competition this year. Congratulations, Ella, Jacob, Sreeman, Ainsley, and Colin! 💚💛

Spring Valley High School Earns Bronze Recognition on 2025 AP School Honor Roll 🎓💚💛

Spring Valley High School is proud to announce its designation as a Bronze-level school on the College Board’s 2025 AP School Honor Roll. This recognition highlights Spring Valley’s continued success in expanding access to Advanced Placement (AP) courses and improving student outcomes in rigorous, college-level academics.

Earning the Bronze distinction reflects meaningful achievement in key performance areas, including a strong percentage of seniors who have taken at least one AP exam and a notable number of students earning a score of 3 or higher on at least one AP exam. These outcomes demonstrate Spring Valley’s commitment to preparing students for college and career readiness.

The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools nationwide that are effectively using AP programs to help more students succeed in college. Designations are based on criteria such as:

  • The percentage of graduating students who have taken at least one AP exam
  • The percentage of students who earned a score of 3 or higher
  • The percentage of students who have taken five or more AP exams

This achievement reflects the dedication of Spring Valley’s students, teachers, counselors, and administrators who work together to support academic excellence and opportunity for all.

Congratulations to our Viking community on this outstanding accomplishment! 💚💛

Spring Valley Student Leaders Present Winter Days Impact to Richland Two Board 💚💛

Spring Valley Student Body President and Winter Days Chair, Imani Howard, along with Student Body Officer and Winter Days Junior Chair, Karson Smith, proudly represented Spring Valley High School at a recent Richland School District Two Board Meeting, accompanied by Mrs. Olisa Ashford, Student Activities Director.

During the presentation, Imani and Karson shared the powerful story and impact of Winter Days, Spring Valley’s largest school-wide community service initiative, which has been a cherished, student-led tradition since 1984. They emphasized that Winter Days is more than an event—it is a legacy of leadership, compassion, and service that unites students, staff, families, and community partners around a shared mission to serve others with heart.

This year’s theme, “A Nutcracker Christmas,” symbolized resilience, courage, and standing strong together for something greater than oneself. The students highlighted how Winter Days provided a meaningful reminder that even during challenging times, students can lead with empathy and create real, lasting change.

Karson shared how essential strong leadership and support have been to the success of Winter Days, noting the encouragement and trust from Principal Jeff Temoney, whose belief in student voice and leadership empowers students to turn ideas into action. Guided by Richland Two’s mission and core values of belonging, learning, continuous improvement, and joy, Spring Valley students didn’t just meet their goals this year—they exceeded them.

Winter Days 2025 Impact Highlights:

  • Adopted 16 families, impacting 39 individuals through Families Helping Families
  • Collected 1,003 children’s books for Richland Two’s Ready to Read program
  • Raised $8,470 for Make-A-Wish South Carolina
  • Donated 3,050+ toiletry items to Transitions Homeless Shelter
  • Collected 492 new toys for Toys for Tots of Columbia
  • Gathered 41,048 servings of canned and non-perishable food items for families across Richland Two and the Midlands, including donations to Harvest Hope Food Bank and the Salvation Army

In addition, Spring Valley’s School and Community Outreach Committee mentored student leaders at several elementary schools, helping them organize their own mini service drives and teaching the importance of servant leadership.

Imani closed by reminding the board that Winter Days represents learning beyond the classroom—learning rooted in leadership, empathy, and service. She encouraged everyone to remember that giving back isn’t about how much you have, but about choosing to care, and that even the smallest acts of service can make a lasting difference.

Spring Valley is incredibly proud of Imani Howard, Karson Smith, and all of our student leaders whose dedication, compassion, and commitment to service continue to inspire our school and community. Their presentation was a true reflection of Viking leadership in action. 💚💛

WINTER BREAK

Winter Days 2025: Thank You, Viking Nation! 💚💛🎄

As our Winter Days school-wide community outreach comes to a close, we want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to every student, staff member, family, and community partner who contributed. Your generosity and commitment continue to make Winter Days one of Spring Valley’s most meaningful traditions.

Since 1984, Winter Days has remained the largest annual community outreach initiative at Spring Valley High School. This beloved project unites our Viking community in service—supporting local agencies, families in need, and organizations that rely on our care and compassion.

Each year, our committee chairs work closely with community partners to identify needs, set collection goals, and coordinate a wide range of charitable drives. Their leadership—paired with the overwhelming generosity of our students and families—allows us to make a lasting impact throughout the Midlands.

This year’s outreach included donations toward:

  • Cans & Non-Perishable Food Items
  • Toys
  • Families Helping Families
  • Homeless Outreach Items
  • Children’s Books (K–5)
  • Make-A-Wish South Carolina

We are proud to share that, once again, our students exceeded their goals in every category! Your donations directly support families facing real challenges and uplift our community when it matters most.

Winter Days brings out the very best of Viking Nation—compassion, service, unity, and the true spirit of giving.

Thank you for helping us keep this cherished legacy alive and impactful.

Together, we continue to make a difference. 💚💛✨

SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT:

The following school partnerships were instrumental in assisting Spring Valley Winter Days in their giving efforts. Many of our partner schools hosted mini Winter Days programs in their respective schools, allowing students to see firsthand what it means to give to others who are less fortunate.

  • Lonnie B. Nelson Elementary
  • North Springs Elementary
  • Polo Road Elementary
  • Pontiac Elementary
  • Windsor Elementary
  • Center for Inquiry
  • Center for Knowledge
  • Summit Parkway Middle School
  • E.L. Wright Middle School

Winter Days in the Spotlight: Spring Valley Shares Our Story with WLTX

Spring Valley was grateful for the opportunity to share the story of Winter Days with Whitney Sullivan at WLTX, alongside our amazing Student Body President and Winter Days Chair, Imani Howard, and our Student Activities Director, Mrs. Olisa Ashford.

Our Spring Valley Vikings are truly leading with heart, and it was an honor to spotlight the incredible ways our students are giving back and making a real impact across our community. We are so proud of this work—and even more proud of these young leaders who continue to represent Viking Nation with service, compassion, and excellence.

Thank you, WLTX, for helping us highlight what makes Spring Valley special. 💚💛

Fall Semester Wrap-Up 🎬💚💛

We’re excited to share a video recap of the Fall Semester that features clips and footage captured by our Valley Media Team throughout the semester. This video highlights the moments, memories, and milestones that made this fall at Spring Valley so special.

A special thank you to Mady Anderson for bringing these clips together and creating an amazing video that truly reflects the spirit and pride of Viking Nation.

As we head into the second semester, Vikings, get ready — 2026 has so much to look forward to! From new teachers and classes to prom, spring sports, and graduation for the Class of 2026, there are many exciting moments ahead.

Here’s to finishing strong and making even more memories at The Valley! 💚💛

Stockings of Stories: FIERCE Spreads Holiday Cheer at North Springs Elementary

On Wednesday, December 17th, Spring Valley High School’s FIERCE Female Mentoring Group visited North Springs Elementary for a morning of service, leadership, and holiday joy.

Our FIERCE ladies spent time reading with students in Kindergarten through 1st grade, helping create meaningful moments that encouraged literacy and connection. After storytime, the group partnered with the Kindergarten classes for a holiday project—making festive holiday cards and sharing encouragement with our youngest learners.

To wrap up the visit, FIERCE delivered 132 “Stockings of Stories” filled with books and goodies for students in Pre-K through Kindergarten. Seeing the excitement on students’ faces reminded us why this outreach matters—and how powerful it is when student leaders use their time to uplift others.

We are grateful to North Springs Elementary for welcoming our Vikings and giving our students the opportunity to serve. The best compliment of all: North Springs has invited FIERCE to return in the spring, and we cannot wait to continue building this partnership.

Thank you to everyone who supported Stockings of Stories and helped make this visit possible. FIERCE is proud to lead with purpose—one story at a time.

Spring Valley Hosts 2025 FBLA Regional Leadership Conference

Spring Valley was proud to host the 2025 FBLA Regional Leadership Conference on December 6, 2025. We welcomed schools from across the region as students competed, connected, and showcased their leadership and career-ready skills in a wide range of events.

From strong presentations to standout teamwork, our Vikings represented Spring Valley with confidence and excellence. Congratulations to all of our participants—and a special shoutout to our winners listed below!

Thank you to our FBLA advisors, judges, volunteers, and visiting schools for helping make the day a success. We’re proud of our students for continuing to lead, compete, and shine.

Congratulations to Mrs. Melissa Dissinger! 💚💛

Congratulations to Mrs. Melissa Dissinger, who has been awarded a $250 grant from the Richland Two Education Foundation for the 2025–2026 school year!

Mrs. Dissinger’s grant will support the purchase of a high-resolution document camera for her science classroom. This resource will allow students to easily project and share lab results and data with the class, encouraging discussion and deeper understanding of scientific findings. Students will be able to explain their data, troubleshoot challenges together, and visually connect concepts alongside verbal instruction—benefiting all learners, especially those who thrive with visual supports.

The document camera will also enhance classroom demonstrations, enabling students to clearly view measurements, scientific equipment, and experiments in real time.

Mrs. Dissinger shared her appreciation for the opportunity, noting how this technology will strengthen instruction and student engagement in science.

Thank you to the Richland Two Education Foundation for continuing to invest in our teachers and provide tools that enrich learning at Spring Valley High School. 💚💛

Spring Valley Key Club Spreads Holiday Cheer 🎄💚💛

The Spring Valley Key Club had a wonderful time giving back and being of service to the Salvation Army this holiday season. Through their efforts, our students helped spread joy, kindness, and the true spirit of the holidays within our community.

We are proud of our Key Club members for their continued commitment to service and for representing Viking Nation with heart. Thank you for making a difference this holiday season! 💚💛

Faculty & Staff Celebrate the Holidays at Annual Holiday Social 🎄💚💛

Spring Valley faculty and staff wrapped up the first semester and celebrated the holiday season together at our annual Holiday Social. This year’s theme, Elf, reminded everyone of the joy, laughter, and cheer that make the holidays special.

Faculty and staff enjoyed great food, fellowship, games, and more as they came together to relax, connect, and reflect on a successful semester.

A special thank you to the Spring Valley Education Foundation for sponsoring the food for this event and for their continued support of our faculty and staff.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this event memorable. View the pictures below to see the smiles, laughter, and cheer shared at The Valley! 💚💛

SVHS Librarian & City Poet Laureate Pens Poem for Finlay Park Reopening

Spring Valley High School is proud to celebrate Mrs. Jennifer Bartell Boykin, our school librarian and the Poet Laureate of the City of Columbia, for her newest commissioned work honoring a major moment in our community.

As Poets.org explains, “An occasional poem is a poem written to document or provide commentary on an event. It is often intended to be read or performed publicly.” In that spirit, the City of Columbia commissioned Mrs. Boykin to write an occasional poem for the reopening of Finlay Park in downtown Columbia.

Mrs. Boykin’s poem, “Finally Finlay,” was presented for the first time at the City Council’s regular meeting on December 16, 2025.

The video featured above includes Mrs. Boykin reading the poem alongside visuals from Finlay Park’s opening day on November 15, 2025. The footage was captured by New Sky Film Production, helping bring the poem’s imagery and message to life.

A meaningful symbol woven throughout the poem is the Carolina Wren—whose nest inspired parts of the park’s design—appearing as a sign of hope. “Finally Finlay” ultimately positions the park as a place of joy, enjoyment, and peace for the people of Columbia and beyond.

We are honored to have Mrs. Boykin representing Spring Valley through her voice, creativity, and leadership in the arts. Congratulations on this incredible recognition and contribution to our city.

  • It is imperative that your student is present and on time for their designated Exam Date. The Exam Schedule can be found on the frontpage of our website. Students will not be able to be signed out of school during these assessments. Failure to complete the exam will result in a 0% on the assessment and a loss of 20% of the student’s overall grade.

  • All technology, besides a school issued Chromebook, is strictly prohibited for the entire duration of testing. This includes, but is not limited to, cell phones, headphones, smart watches, etc. Failure to completely power off these devices, store them in a bag or purse, and place them in a designated area of the room provided by teachers will lead to discipline consequences, administrative search of devices/phones, and potential 0% score on the exam.
  • As with any test, a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast is important leading up to test day.

EOC Testing will begin with our English 2 Writing portion on Thursday, December 5th. The conclusion of the English 2 EOC, as well as all other EOCs, will follow the Semester 1 Exam Schedule. If you have any questions regarding the EOC, please contact the School Testing Coordinator, Mr. Joshua Dundr.

Winter Days has been a cherished Spring Valley tradition since 1984, and it remains the largest annual school-wide community outreach initiative at Spring Valley High School. This beloved project brings together students, staff, and families in support of local agencies and schools in need.

Each year, our committee chairs connect with community partners to identify needs, set collection goals, and coordinate a wide range of charitable drives. Their leadership—paired with the generous spirit of our Viking community—helps us make a lasting impact on families and organizations throughout the Midlands.

This year, as many families continue to face challenges meeting basic needs, your support matters more than ever. Please see the attached flyers for suggested donation items. Every contribution, big or small, helps us spread hope and joy this holiday season.

Spring Valley will also serve as a community drop-off location for non-perishable food items. All donations will be sorted, packaged, and promptly delivered to local food pantries and outreach agencies.

If you know Spring Valley students or families in immediate need, please contact our School Social Worker, Mrs. Morgan Daniels, at modaniels@richland2.org.

FALL EXAM SCHEDULE

For students enrolled in Algebra 1, Biology, English 2, and US History and Constitution for 1st Semester, students will be completing their State End Of Course Examination (EOC). The EOC for these classes is a State mandated, comprehensive assessment that is worth 20% of the total grade. Due to the nature of this assessment there are a number of rules and procedures that must be followed by both staff and students. Please be aware of the following information for all EOC Exams:

  • It is imperative that your student is present and on time for their designated Exam Date. The Exam Schedule can be found on the frontpage of our website. Students will not be able to be signed out of school during these assessments. Failure to complete the exam will result in a 0% on the assessment and a loss of 20% of the student’s overall grade.
  •  Students will need a fully charged, school issued Chromebook to take the assessment. Please ensure your student charges their device the night before.

SVHS Interact Club & Spring Valley Rotary Club Dedicate Peace Pole at The Valley 🕊️💚💛

On Tuesday, November 18th, Spring Valley High School proudly held a Peace Pole Dedication Ceremony on campus. This meaningful project was initiated by Past Rotary Club President Ted Rausch, who began the vision and saw it come to life today.

The dedication was sponsored jointly by the Spring Valley Rotary Club and their Satellite Club, in partnership with the SVHS Interact Club. Together, these groups celebrated unity, peace, and service — values deeply rooted in both Rotary and Interact leadership.

The theme, “What Peace Means to Me,” guided the ceremony as students and community members reflected on the importance of peace within our school, our community, and the world.

We are grateful for our ongoing partnership with Spring Valley Rotary and Richland School District Two. It was truly an inspiring day at The Valley.

Counseling Department Hosts Three Powerful Lunch & Learn Events 💼💚💛

The Spring Valley Counseling Department recently hosted three engaging Lunch & Learn sessions, giving students the chance to sharpen their skills, explore future career paths, and connect directly with accomplished professionals.

Midlands Orthodontics

Midlands Orthodontics gave our Vikings an inside look at the many careers that keep a successful orthodontic office running smoothly, including:

🔹 Office Manager

🔹 Treatment Coordinator

🔹 Lead Assistant

Students learned about the teamwork, communication, and technical skills behind creating confident smiles every day. Midlands Orthodontics also shared exciting work-based learning opportunities currently available to Spring Valley students — and even provided lunch!

A special highlight of this session was the return of SVHS alumna Sarah Queen, now part of the Midlands Orthodontics team.

Seeing our graduates return to pour into the next generation makes moments like this truly unforgettable. 💛💙

Columbia Fire Department – Richland

Mr. James Bostic from the Columbia Fire Department–Richland introduced students to the many paths available within fire services. He discussed benefits such as:

  • Educational reimbursement
  • Employee health center
  • Gym membership
  • Free training and uniforms
  • SC State Firefighters’ Association membership
  • Possible college credit
  • State tax credit incentives

Volunteer recruit requirements include:

✔️ Age 18+

✔️ High school diploma/GED

✔️ Valid Class D driver’s license (no more than 4 points)

✔️ No felony convictions

✔️ Must live in the service area

Becoming a volunteer can open the door to a career position, offering hands-on experience, training, and advancement opportunities.

MUSC Health

Latoya Washington from MUSC Health introduced students to the wide range of careers within one of South Carolina’s leading healthcare systems. MUSC Health is known for:

  • Its patient- and family-centered care
  • Nationally recognized specialized care teams
  • A downtown Charleston campus
  • 100+ outreach and clinical locations
  • A robust telehealth network
  • Over 1 million patient encounters annually

Students gained insight into the many pathways available — from clinical roles to leadership, administration, and technological innovation.

Lunch & Learn in the ’Brary: Celebrating Native American Heritage Month 🌾🎶

On November 17th, students joined us in the ’Brary for a special Lunch & Learn session led by Mrs. Edwards. In honor of Native American Heritage Month, students participated in a hands-on cultural activity where they created their own rainsticks.

This creative project not only allowed students to explore the artistry and traditions connected to Indigenous cultures, but also encouraged reflection on the significance of Native American history and heritage.

Thank you to Mrs. Edwards for leading this meaningful activity and to all the students who participated and made it a fun, engaging celebration of culture and learning! 💚💛

HAPPY VETERANS DAY

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE

Honoring Our Heroes: Veterans Day at Spring Valley 🇺🇸💚💛

Today, Spring Valley High School proudly celebrated Veterans Day, taking time to honor and show appreciation for the brave men and women who have served — and continue to serve — in our nation’s armed forces.

Our Veterans Day Assembly featured powerful performances and presentations, including our Symphonic Band, Drill Team, and JROTC students, who led the ceremony with pride and precision. We were also honored to welcome Chief Master Sergeant Rodney J. McKinley of the U.S. Air Force as our guest speaker. His message of service, honor, and perseverance deeply inspired our students and staff.

🎥 Watch the Veterans Day Assembly Video — featuring the Symphonic Band, Drill Team, JROTC, and our guest speaker.

In addition, our Student Council (StuCo) created a special slideshow presentation to show appreciation for Spring Valley faculty and staff who have served in the military, as well as those who have family members currently serving.

🎞️ View the StuCo Veterans Appreciation Slideshow — honoring our Viking staff and their families for their dedication and sacrifice.

Spring Valley thanks you for all that you do. 🇺🇸

We are deeply grateful to all veterans — past and present — for your courage, service, and sacrifice.

Viking Update November 7th

Winter Days Have Begun! ❄️💚💛

The Valley presents… A Nutcracker Christmas!
The magic, the music, the giving — it all begins NOW!

Winter Days has been a cherished Spring Valley tradition since 1984, and it continues to be the largest annual school-wide community outreach initiative at Spring Valley High School.

Each year, the project brings our entire Viking community together through a variety of charitable drives supporting multiple local organizations. Committee chairs work hard to identify agency needs, set collection goals, and lead the meaningful and rewarding challenge of coordinating this extensive effort.

Let the season of giving begin at The Valley! 🎄✨

WAYS TO GIVE

SVHS Students Win First Place at JA Stock Market Challenge! 📈🏆

On November 4th, students from Spring Valley participated in the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge, held at Stone River in West Columbia. The event kicked off with a career panel featuring professionals from the finance career cluster, giving students valuable insight into careers in business, investing, and financial planning.

Following the panel, students took part in a live stock market simulation, competing against other schools in a fast-paced, real-world investing scenario. Our Vikings showed incredible teamwork and strategy — walking away with 1st place for the Midlands division! 💚💛

If their portfolio remains in the top two after the Upstate and Lowcountry divisions compete, they will be one of the teams selected to travel to Boston to compete at Nationals.

Congratulations to our students for this outstanding achievement — and good luck as we await the final standings! 📊✨ #VikingPride #JASMC #FutureInvestors

Vikings Are Region Champions! 🏆💚💛

For the first time since 2021, the Spring Valley Vikings are Region Champions! Our athletes delivered an incredible performance, showcasing hard work, determination, and true Viking spirit.

👏 Outstanding races from:

  • Joseph
  • Noah
  • Ryan
  • Ethan
  • Andrew – JV Region Champion!

For many of our runners, this was their final race. While not every time was a personal best, the meet was filled with the same energy, teamwork, and excitement that has defined the season.

A huge shoutout to our amazing parents for supporting the team every single year—through every meet, every mile, and every moment. We appreciate you!

Congratulations, Vikings! 💚💛

SVHS FBLA Attends SC FBLA State Fall Leadership Conference 💼💜

Members of Spring Valley FBLA attended the SC FBLA State Fall Leadership Conference, where they participated in a full day of leadership development, networking, and service.

FBLA students Ethan Bell and Dhruv Bavishi, along with advisers Mrs. DuBose and Mrs. Wilbur-Hemphill, are pictured during the conference’s Mini-Walk to End Alzheimer’s—a meaningful event that raised awareness and advocated for global research to end Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.

Throughout the conference, attendees engaged in leadership workshops, participated in a networking lunch, and connected with business leaders and peers from across the state. FBLA continues to inspire and prepare students to become community-minded business leaders through hands-on career preparation and leadership experiences.

Interested in joining FBLA or supporting the fight to end Alzheimer’s?
Ask a member or adviser to learn how you can get involved! 💼💜 #VikingPride #SVFBLA #WalkToEndAlz

Entrepreneurship Students Learn from Local Business Owner Jacquard L. Daniels 💼✨

Spring Valley’s Entrepreneurship students had the inspiring opportunity to hear from Jacquard L. Daniels, owner and operator of The Experience Salon and Spa in Columbia, South Carolina. With over 13 years as a licensed cosmetologist, Mr. Daniels shared his remarkable journey—one that includes opening two successful salons, studying Business Administration at Benedict College, and continuously investing in his growth through business, leadership, and professional development coursework.

Mr. Daniels encouraged students to embrace challenges, learn from their mistakes, and believe in their potential as future entrepreneurs. He also discussed his new work as a life coach, helping others build emotional intelligence and a success-focused mindset.

One of his key messages to students:
“I’d rather learn through my mistakes than keep making the same mistake because I’m not learning.”

He reminded students that their dreams are valid, their emotions matter, and their journey is only beginning.
Learn from it. Grow through it. And always bet on yourself.

Thank you, Mr. Daniels, for motivating our Vikings to pursue their dreams with confidence and resilience! 💚💛

Key Club Celebrates Key Club Week! 🔑💚💛

This week, Spring Valley Key Club is proudly celebrating Key Club Week, spreading kindness and positivity throughout The Valley!

Students and staff have enjoyed a variety of meaningful activities, including:

🔑 Positive Message Keys – Key Club members placed paper keys around the school for students and staff to write uplifting and encouraging notes.
📸 “Be the I in KIND” Photo Station – A special spot in the gym where Vikings can take photos standing in for the “I,” reminding everyone that kindness starts with you.

We’re proud of our Key Club members for promoting compassion, leadership, and service across campus. Keep up the great work, Key Club!

Students—want to make a difference?
Join Key Club and pledge to be kind! 💛🌟
