Discovery Freshman Places Third in the 2023 BrainBee Competition

On March 25th Spring Valley Discovery freshman, Anoushka Bhaskar, competed in the SC Brain Bee, a full-day neuroscience competition for high school students hosted by the University of South Carolina. The SC Brain Bee is part of the North America Region of the International Brain Bee, a non-profit organization with the mission “to motivate students to learn about the brain and to inspire them to pursue careers in neuroscience so they can help treat and find cures for brain disorders” (www.thebrainbee.org/about/). Competitors were quizzed on brain facts, neurological diseases, and brain development. Anoushka placed third overall in the competition, quite an accomplishment for a freshman!
In preparation for the event, Anoushka completed the NeuroSC virtual neuroscience course that began in January, 2023. Professors and students from the University of South Carolina introduced the foundations of the brain and nervous system to current South Carolina high school students through a one-hour virtual class each week for eight weeks. Through this course students were able to:
- Explore foundations and research in neuroscience and appreciate how the brain allows us to interact with the world.
- Learn about brain anatomy, its cognitive functions, artificial intelligence, and mental health.
- Connect with scientists and undergraduate, Ph.D., and medical school students to learn more about education after high school and potential career paths in science.
Congratulations to Anoushka on her accomplishment!
