Spring Valley Students Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists
Spring Valley High School is proud to announce that three exceptional Vikings have been named semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students have demonstrated outstanding academic ability and strong potential for success in rigorous college studies.
Congratulations to our semifinalists:
- Debasmita Mishra
- Sarthak Nelakuditi
- Rudra H. Patel
They rank among approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. They were selected from a pool of more than 1.2 million juniors representing approximately 20,000 high schools who took the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
The semifinalists will now compete for approximately 6,700 scholarships valued at nearly $24 million. Historically, about 95 percent of semifinalists advance to the finalist level, with roughly half of the finalists ultimately earning the prestigious title of National Merit Scholar.
Students advancing to the finalist level will compete for three types of National Merit Scholarships:
- 2,500 National Merit® $2500 Scholarships, awarded on a state-representational basis
- Approximately 700 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards, provided by about 120 corporations and business organizations
- Approximately 3,500 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards, financed by about 140 colleges and universities for finalists attending the sponsoring institutions
The 2027 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced through a series of nationwide releases from April through July.
We are incredibly proud of Debasmita, Sarthak, and Rudra for their hard work and outstanding accomplishments. Spring Valley looks forward to cheering them on as they continue in the competition. Congratulations! 💚💛

Spring Valley Earns National Recognition! 🏆💚💛

Spring Valley High School has earned top-tier recognition by placing in the top 20% of high schools nationwide in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools Rankings. Spring Valley ranked No. 43 among high schools in South Carolina and achieved a 91% graduation rate.
“These rankings are a strong measure of our district’s overall academic health,” said Superintendent Dr. Kim Moore. “While our strategic goals will always push us to improve, this recognition proves we are delivering on our core mission: equipping students for higher education, service, and successful careers.”
The U.S. News rankings evaluate data from more than 27,000 public high schools across the country, officially ranking nearly 18,000. Schools are measured across several key factors, including college curriculum and readiness, state assessment performance, graduation rates, and the academic achievement of underserved students.
This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of our students, faculty, staff, families, and the entire Viking community. We are proud to see Spring Valley recognized among the nation’s best!
Once a Viking, always a Viking. 💚💛
