Spring Valley Celebrates Five National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists
Spring Valley High School is proud to announce that five of our students have been named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists in the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These exceptional Vikings have demonstrated outstanding academic ability and strong potential for success in rigorous college studies.
Congratulations to our semifinalists:
- Ella Baker
- Jacob Carter
- Sreeman Parise
- Ainsley Ropel
- Colin Tang
They are among approximately 16,000 students nationwide—less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors—who earned this recognition based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
About 95 percent of semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist stage, and nearly half of those finalists will go on to earn a National Merit Scholarship, gaining the title of Merit Scholar®. Scholarships awarded include:
- 2,500 National Merit® $2500 Scholarships (awarded on a state-representational basis)
- 950 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards (sponsored by companies and organizations across the country)
- 3,800 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards (offered by more than 160 colleges and universities to students who enroll at their institutions)
We are incredibly proud of these five students for their hard work and accomplishments. Spring Valley looks forward to cheering them on as they continue in the competition this year. Congratulations, Ella, Jacob, Sreeman, Ainsley, and Colin! 💚💛

SPRING VALLEY CELEBRATES AVID DAY

Spring Valley students and staff came together to celebrate AVID Day, thanks to the leadership and initiative of our AVID teacher, Dr. Platt. The day was filled with energy, pride, and a focus on the future.
To mark the occasion, the school community wore college gear to showcase school spirit and promote higher education. In addition, AVID classrooms participated in a special activity where students completed “Because of AVID, I…” writing prompts, reflecting on how the program has shaped their goals, confidence, and success.
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is designed to prepare students for college and career readiness by building critical skills in writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading. At Spring Valley, AVID continues to inspire students to dream big and pursue their full potential.
We are grateful for Dr. Platt’s dedication and for our students who proudly shared their AVID journeys. Days like this highlight the impact of the program and the power of preparation, determination, and community.

Spring Valley High School Named Among the Nation’s Best

Spring Valley High School is proud to announce that we have been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s best high schools. This prestigious ranking highlights the dedication of our students, the commitment of our teachers and staff, and the unwavering support of our Viking community.
Being named among the best schools in the country is a reflection of the hard work that happens every day in our classrooms and beyond. We are committed to continuing this tradition of excellence by preparing our students for success in college, careers, and life.

Spring Valley Media Center Beanstack Reading Challenge 📚💚💛

The Spring Valley High School Media Center has kicked off the Beanstack Reading Challenge, inspiring students to read more and build a strong culture of literacy on campus. By encouraging regular reading, the challenge not only fosters a love for books but also helps improve academic performance and boost student achievement.

We’re excited to congratulate our August winners of the challenge! Thank you for starting the year strong with your reading habits. As we move into September, we encourage all students to participate in the “Fall into Reading” Challenge and start logging their minutes.
A special thank you goes to our amazing Media Center team—Mrs. Jennifer Boykin, Mrs. Allison Pack, and Media Center Aide Ms. Alsena Edwards—for leading this initiative and encouraging our Vikings to dive into reading.
Keep reading, Vikings—your next adventure awaits in the pages of a book!

9th Grade Fresh Re-Start Huddle 💚💛
Spring Valley held a 9th Grade Fresh Re-Start Huddle in the middle of the first semester to encourage and guide our newest Vikings as they continue their transition into high school.
During the event, our administrative team and 9th-grade guidance counselors spoke with students about expectations for the school year, the importance of staying engaged, and the many opportunities available at Spring Valley.
This huddle gave our freshmen a chance to connect directly with their school leaders, ask questions, and feel supported as they move forward in their high school journey. We are excited to see our 9th graders grow, thrive, and make the most of their Viking experience this year!

Thank You for Joining Us at Fall Open House 🍂

Spring Valley High School would like to thank all of our Viking families who joined us for Fall Open House on September 3rd. It was another wonderful evening and a great opportunity to showcase the strong partnership we share with our families.
We were excited to see such a large turnout this year and to hear so many kind words from parents and guardians about our school and staff. Your support and involvement mean so much to our Viking community.
Thank you for making this year’s Open House such a success!

Spring Valley Students Honored by College Board National Recognition Programs

Spring Valley High School is proud to announce that a number of our students have earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. These programs celebrate students’ hard work in high school and showcase their strong academic performance.
The honors are especially significant for students in rural areas, as well as Black, Indigenous, and/or Latino students, giving them the opportunity to share their academic achievements with colleges and scholarship programs seeking to recruit diverse talent.
To be considered, students must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher, score in the top 10% nationally on the PSAT/NMSQT® or PSAT™ 10, or earn a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP® exams in 9th or 10th grade. Eligible students apply through BigFuture and are awarded at the start of the following school year—perfect timing to share their achievements during college applications.
“We’re thrilled to celebrate our students and recognize them for the great work they’ve been doing. We’re proud of their strong academic performance in the classroom and on College Board assessments. Spring Valley Students Tour Wofford College 🎓💚💛
On Thursday, September 11th, the Spring Valley CIC Department took 29 juniors and seniors on an exciting college tour of Wofford College.
During the visit, students had the opportunity to explore the campus, walk through classrooms, and get a first-hand look at college life. The experience gave them valuable insight into what it’s like to live and learn in a college environment, helping them better prepare for their next steps after high school.
A special highlight of the day was that the tour was led by SVHS alumni Lillian Amick and Mariam Ali, who are both now sophomores at Wofford. They shared their experiences and provided students with helpful advice—especially meaningful since they once walked the same halls at Spring Valley. We can’t wait to see the great things ahead for both of them!
We are so proud of our students for taking this important step toward their future and grateful to Wofford College for welcoming our Vikings so warmly.
