Students Compete at the National JSHS Research Competition

The Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) is the premier showcase for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) research by high school students. The Tri-Service – the Departments of the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force – sponsored event took place last week and was hosted by the Kirtland Air Force Base and administered by the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA). The first in-person national event since 2019 brought together 224 high school students and approximately 130 teachers, mentors, university faculty, military personnel, and more to compete and celebrate student achievement in the sciences. In addition to presenting their original research, students participated in lab tours, social events, and a career and reverse science fair.

Three Spring Valley Discovery students, Shriya Kapoor, Eileen Chen and Cathy Tang, competed at the National JSHS and were accompanied by Michelle Spigner. All three students did a fantastic job with their research presentations and represented Discovery, Spring Valley and the state of SC well! Eileen won 3rd place in the Medicine and Health oral competition and a $4,000 tuition scholarship. Cathy won 1st place in the Chemistry poster presentation competition and a $500 award. Please congratulate these students on a job well done!

“Fictional finalism”
by Jisoo Lee

A princess is not born dreaming she will
Become a princess but queens always are and so we
dream our way to the throne. So we are told to shoot for the moon
And taught to look up at dark clouds praying
For the shimmering curtains that part before those who fought
Their way through the tempest. So I walk as if my path is strewn
With diamonds and red velvet, as if
a crown
is waiting at the end of the aisle. So I breathe as if
My breaths are made of dandelion seeds, carrying
My visions into the world. So they plant themselves into
The ground, maybe not as dandelions, but as roses and pine
Trees and poison ivy that likes to grow on castle walls, breathing
Hope of their own, waiting
To unfold.

Congratulations to Mrs. Carmen Nazario!

We wanted to let all of our families know that we will be experiencing some traffic issues on Sparkleberry Lane in front of the school over the next 2-3 months.  Richland County will be making updates to the gas lines, storm drains, and adding sidewalks.  Work crews will do their best to minimize the impact to arrival and departure times at school.  If you are a car rider or student driver, we strongly encourage you to arrive early to school to make sure you are on time for class.

After School Tutoring

We will offer both on-campus and virtual tutoring options this year.  Offering both platforms allows us to provide more options for students to get academic assistance after school.  Please visit the SVHS Tutoring website for a complete schedule of the tutoring opportunities.

A special thank you goes out to the Spring Valley Education Foundation for funding this important initiative.
