Spring Valley “Teacher of the Month” program is designed to recognize teachers who are making a profound and positive difference in the lives of our students. Each month during the school year Spring Valley students, teachers, parents, and staff are given a chance to vote for a teacher and explain how that teacher has made an impact on them. Congratulations to the “Teacher of the Month” for October Ms. Monique Brown.

Who is your favorite Teacher & Support Staff Employee of The Month? Please take a moment to fill out the November nomination form that was emailed to students and parents. This November we are voting for your favorite Math Teacher and Support Staff (Main Office). Voting will end on November 19th at 4:00 pm. The winner for each month will be selected and announced at the designated time. Please note that your nomination letter will be shared with the teacher and classified employee selected.

CAREER CONVERSATION “COMPUTER PROGRAMMER”

Are you interested in or considering a career as a computer programmer?
Are you willing to consider a non-traditional college pathway?
If you answered yes to both of those questions, please come to an information meeting on Wednesday, November 17 at lunch to learn more about CREATE OPPORTUNITY COLUMBIA! The goal of Create Opportunity Columbia (CO Cola) is to “Find, train, and employ quality computer programmers to meet the growing needs of the industry in the Midlands. You MUST be 18 by Summer 2022 to participate.

Quick Program Information and what to expect:
Screening/Virtual Assessment–-90-minute aptitude test will be taken at SV. The assessment focuses on innate thinking patterns and not on exposure to programming or coding experience. (14-18% of people are “wired” this way, are you?)
Interview–-Those who pass will be interviewed by CO Cola to assess the desire to be part of this industry. This will be a real interview, so preparation is key!
Training–Six-month program at MTC, with cohorts beginning in July/August with a self-paced module to finish in the spring.**What you can expect in the program: M-Th: 9:00-4:30; F-9:00-1:30**
Apprenticeship–Two-year paid apprenticeship (starting at $40,000 with retirement and benefits) along with a personal mentor to work with you throughout your apprenticeship.
The outcome–-Placed as Middle-Level Programmer and salary is increased to current market salary (Currently the salary ranges from $60-80K)

Parent University Virtual Session for Juniors

Mark your calendars and plan to attend the Parent University Virtual Session for Juniors on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
The junior conferences with the school counselors will begin December 6, 2021. In addition to learning more about your child’s graduation status and discussing their future plans, take advantage of this virtual session which is being offered by the College and Career Center (CCC). We will introduce the importance of the college search and college visitation process, review the criteria for state subsidized scholarships, present useful tips on developing winning essays, and provide best practices for writing attention grabbing resumes. We will also share our expertise on ACT/SAT and ASVAB testing along with optimizing the Naviance college and career platform.

SAT/ACT WORKSHOP

The SAT/ ACT preparation course through Attest Test Prep is being offered this school year. It takes place on November 16th, 2021 in person. The session is from 8:45 a.m.- 1:26 p.m. The concepts covered are Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Pre Calculus Grammatical Writing, Evidence-Based Reading & Writing. Students will have breaks throughout and a half-hour lunch break. Students can bring a lunch or bagged lunch will be provided. Students attending the session will receive an excused absence for their participation. There are 75 slots available social distancing guidelines will be followed. FIRST COME FIRST SERVE!

The Green & Gold, Spring Valley’s Literary Magazine, is accepting submissions of writing (poetry and prose) and art for its Fall 2021 edition. We are moving to a digital format for the first time this year! The Green & Gold staff is my Advanced Writer’s Workshop (The Sequel to Creative Writing) class.
