Spring Valley JROTC Continues its Winning Ways!

The Spring Valley JROTC continued its streak of winning competitions statewide. Albeit, known for its prowess in drill competitions, the Vikings showed their class in a new area for them–academics! The four-person team (Jacob Stoll, Stephanie Babinec, Sarah Hedley, Rachel Canizares) competed against three other schools virtually in the Ashley Ridge Fierce Fox Combined Meet on Friday, 12 Feb. Spring Valley bested the other schools in a range of questions from ACT/SAT, JROTC drill and customs, and current events. They are still awaiting the results of their bid for the finals of the National JROTC Academic Bowl competition.
Congratulations to the Spring Valley JROTC Academic Bowl Team!

Palmetto Girls State

Attention Junior girls,
American Legion Auxiliary Palmetto Girls State is coming this summer! ALA PGS is a weeklong summer program designed to immerse you in a real, functioning government, in the mythical State of Palmetto. You’ll meet lots of new friends from across the state, and you may even be eligible for some college scholarships!
The 74th annual session of the American Legion Auxiliary Palmetto Girls State is now accepting applications for delegate selection. Each year, ALA PGS is held to provide a unique forum for the state’s rising high school senior girls to learn about government and the political process. This year’s PGS will be held virtually from Sunday, June 13, to Friday, June 18. ALA PGS allows young women to expand their leadership skills and meet other outstanding young women from across the state. Some delegates even form lifelong bonds from their time at ALA PGS.
It is an honor to be selected as a delegate to American Legion Auxiliary Palmetto Girls State. The American Legion and its Auxiliary sponsor Boys and Girls State to educate our youth in the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of American citizenship. State programs are held nationally, and alumni of these programs are known and recognized nationwide for their academic achievement and civic leadership. Many alumni of Palmetto Boys and Girls State have gone on to successfully run for local and state office in South Carolina. Colleges and universities also offer scholarships to Boys and Girls State alumni.
If you’re interested in this awesome opportunity, please click here and complete the application for consideration. Applications are due by March 12. All applications must be completed on the online application form and submitted to Mrs. Olisa Ashford, Student Activities Director via email at oashford@richland2.org. Currently, the College Board reports that a “moderate” college budget for an in-state public college averaged $24,061 per year. A moderate budget at a private college averaged $47,831 per year. Yikes! We hope you will join us for our 30-minute sessions from 6-6:30 p.m. Here’s the registration link please see the flyer above.
