As Black History Month Comes to a Close — The Legacy Continues 🖤💚💛

As Black History Month comes to an end, we recognize that it is not the conclusion of learning — but a continuation. It is a continued commitment to honoring the history before us, understanding the legacy it left, and building upon it with purpose and pride.

Throughout this month, our students and staff engaged in meaningful moments of reflection, celebration, and education. We invite you to view the videos capturing highlights from the powerful experiences our STUCO students documented as they helped celebrate and uplift this important month.

You will also find a recap of our Black History Assembly, which showcased talent, history, culture, and the enduring impact of those who paved the way.

At The Valley, we don’t just remember history — we add to the legacy. 💚💛

STUCO Highlights Black History Through Voices & Stories 🖤💚💛

During the month, our Student Council (STUCO) intentionally used social media to share powerful facts about influential Black historical figures, helping educate and inspire our Viking community.

In addition to spotlighting history, STUCO also interviewed Spring Valley faculty and staff to ask what Black history means to them. These reflections added depth, perspective, and personal connection to the celebration.

Click the video to view the faculty and staff members who participated. We truly appreciate each of you for sharing your words, insight, and heart with our students. 💚💛

Black History Month Spirit Week Highlights 🖤💚💛

During the last week of the month, students participated in a Spirit Week to celebrate Black history, culture, and community. From Wear Your Favorite Kicks Day to a Good Ole Family Reunion theme, our Vikings showed up with pride, style, and school spirit.

🎥 View the video for quick snapshots of how we celebrated throughout the week.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the celebration meaningful and memorable at The Valley! 💚💛

Black History Assembly: A Legacy in Motion — February 27 🖤💚💛

On February 27, Spring Valley High School’s Student Government hosted a powerful Black History Assembly titled “A Legacy in Motion.” This meaningful event honored the extraordinary achievements and contributions of African Americans while reminding our Viking community that Black history is American history—and that each of us has a role in shaping the future.

The assembly served as a tapestry of artistic expression and historical reflection, blending education and entertainment in a way that left a lasting impact on students and staff.

Captivating Performances

The program featured a variety of performances that energized and inspired the audience. Students showcased their talents through stepping—a percussive dance form with deep roots in African traditions—as well as singing and poetry that highlighted culture, identity, and legacy.

Inspiring Words from Antjuan Seawright

We were honored to welcome Antjuan Seawright, CNN Commentator/Contributor, as our guest speaker. His message resonated deeply as he emphasized the importance of understanding Black history and its connection to American history. He encouraged our students and staff to recognize that they are history makers—with the power to leave their own legacy in motion.

A special thank you to Spring Valley alumnus and City Councilman Sam Johnson for presenting our guest speaker and continuing to uplift and support The Valley.

Trailblazer Awards

During the assembly, we proudly presented Trailblazer Awards to individuals who represent leadership, excellence, and impact—both past and present:

  • Antjuan Seawright — CNN Commentator/Contributor (Guest Speaker)
  • Sam Johnson — SVHS Alumnus, City Councilman, Politician, and Activist

  • Jennifer Boykin — Poet Laureate & SVHS Librarian
  • Garrison Thomas — SVHS Alumnus, Entrepreneur, and Community Service Advocate

Army Fitness Challenge Takes Over SVHS PE Classes 💪🇺🇸

The U.S. Army brought high energy and teamwork to Spring Valley as they took over our PE classes for the Army Fitness Challenge, where our students competed against schools across the area and nationwide.

Students rotated through four intense fitness stations, including:

  • Wheelbarrow races
  • Ammo can carries
  • Push-up / Up-down / Bear crawl relay
  • Deadlifts

Participants from PE, Weightlifting, and Health classes were paired into teams and challenged not only physically, but mentally. Teams had to stay together throughout the competition, encourage one another, and work collaboratively to complete each mission.

The competition concluded with winning teams receiving Army Fitness Challenge t-shirts, followed by a question-and-answer session where students had the opportunity to speak directly with the soldiers who administered the challenge.

The energy was high, the competition was fierce, and our students demonstrated outstanding teamwork and determination.

A special thank you to Ethan Grantz, Lead Event Director of the U.S. Army Fitness Challenge, for inviting Spring Valley to participate in this exciting opportunity.
