AP School Honor Roll

Spring Vallely has earned a place on the College Board’s AP School Honor Roll for the 2022-23 school year!

The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools that have done outstanding work to welcome more students into AP courses and support them on the path to college success. Research shows students who take AP courses and exams are more likely to attend college and graduate on time.

The students who enter four-year colleges with credits from AP accelerate their path to graduation and build confidence for college success. Even for those who don’t earn college credit, AP coursework provides early exposure to college-level work and contributes to a college-going school culture

SVHS 9 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMI-FINALISTS

Nine students in Spring Valley High School who are showing exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies are competing for National Merit Scholarships. They are among 16,000 semifinalists in the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

High school juniors entered the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Spring Valley’s National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists are Sanvi Divekar, Jackson Dowey, Shirhan Ganesh Babu, Abagail Greer, Emma Hook, Jisoo Lee, Ava Phelps, Iraine Taine, and Bella Ward.

About 95 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2024. Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit® $2500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis. About 950 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 180 corporations and business organizations for finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located. In addition, about 160 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 3,800 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.

Spring Valley(Discovery and Explorations Magnet Programs) Recertified as a National Demonstration School

Pictured from L-R : Mrs. Stacey Baker; Assistant Principal of Curriculum & Instruction, Mrs. Barbara Turner; Director of Magnet Programs for Richland Two, Mr. Jeff Temoney; SVHS Principal, Dr. Michelle Wyatt; Director of Magnet Programs for SVHS, Ms. Kim Bouchey; Lead Teacher of Explorations Program

Spring Valley High School, home of the Discovery and Explorations magnet programs, is proud to announce that we have again been named a Nationally Certified-Demonstration Magnet School by Magnet Schools of America (MSA), the national association for magnet and theme-based schools. Being recognized as a Nationally Certified-Demonstration Magnet School is a tremendous honor and accomplishment. As a Nationally Certified-Demonstration Magnet School, Spring Valley demonstrated through evidence, reflection, and strategic action, that we have established the Standards of Excellence in our school and fulfilled a commitment to our community stakeholders. Spring Valley was originally certified as a Demonstration School, the highest level of certification, in 2019 and completed the recertification process in June 2023.

MSA created this national certification process to recognize the most exemplary magnet schools in the nation and to applaud them as they continue to grow by providing high-quality, innovative curriculum that promotes choice, equity, diversity, and academic excellence for all students. The certification process is based on the five pillars of magnet schools and the National Magnet School Standards of Excellence. These standards define the essential elements and characteristics of high-quality magnet programs. To learn more about the magnet certification program, please visit https://magnet.edu/certification/national-certification

Mr. Jeff Temoney, Dr. Michelle Wyatt, and Ms. Kim Bouchey will be recognized on behalf of the school during an awards ceremony held at Magnet Schools of America’s 42nd National Conference in New York City, New York, April 16-20, 2024. We are extremely grateful to our school’s staff, students, families, and partners for their active roles in supporting our cognizant efforts to thrive for excellence.

U.S. News & World Report Ranks Spring Valley in the Top 20 High Schools

This year the U.S. News & World Report ranks Spring Valley in the top 20 high schools out of the 243 high schools in the state of SC. Here is Spring Valley’s updated U.S. News profile page, with details about its rankings: https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/south-carolina/districts/richland-02/spring-valley-high-17710.

“Families can use the Best High Schools rankings to see how schools compare at the national, state and local level on factors like graduation rates and college readiness,” said Anita Narayan, managing editor of Education at U.S. News. “The rankings also provide insight into academic performance among underserved groups.”

The methodology focuses on six factors: college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rates. College readiness specifically measures participation and performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams. The data used in this edition is from the 2018-2019 academic school year, and therefore was not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alongside the national rankings, U.S. News published rankings at the state, metro area and school district levels. Only metro areas and school districts with three or more high schools were included in these subrankings.

The Best High Schools rankings are available exclusively on USNews.com and include data on a variety of factors, such as enrollment, student diversity, participation in free and reduced-price lunch programs, graduation rates and the results of state assessments. U.S. News worked with RTI International, a global research firm, to implement the comprehensive ranking methodology. For more information, visit Facebook and Twitter using #BestHighSchools.

Students at Spring Valley earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. • Alexander Lance: NAARA
• Elianna Tracy: NHRA
• Harmonie Frederick: NAARA

“We’re thrilled to celebrate our students and recognize them for the great work they’ve been doing. We’re proud of their strong academic performance in the classroom and on College Board assessments like the PSAT/NMSQT®, PSAT™ 10, and AP® exams,”. “There’s so much that makes our students unique, and receiving this honor reinforces this as an asset for their future.”

The criteria for eligible students include:

  • GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10 assessment scores that are within the top 10% of assessment takers in each state for each award program or earned a score of 3 or higher on 2 or more AP Exams in 9th and 10th grade.
  • Attend school in a rural area or small town, or identify as African American/Black, Hispanic American/Latino, or Indigenous/Native.

Eligible students are invited to apply on BigFuture during their sophomore or junior year and are awarded at the start of the next school year in time to share their achievements in high school as they plan for the future. At the same time, colleges and organizations using College Board’s Student Search Service™ can connect directly with awardees during the recruitment process.

“It’s becoming increasingly hard for students to be ‘seen’ during the college recruitment process. We’re exceptionally proud of the National Recognition Programs for celebrating students who are at times overlooked but have shown their outstanding academic abilities,” said Tarlin Ray, senior vice president of BigFuture® at College Board. “This is a benefit not only for students but also for colleges and universities committed to recruiting diverse and talented students.”
