Spring Valley Seniors Named Candidates for U.S. Presidential Scholars Program
Spring Valley High School seniors Colin Tang and Ella Baker have been selected as candidates for the 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.
Candidates will learn in mid-April whether they have advanced to the group of approximately 800 semifinalists. The final U.S. Presidential Scholars will be announced in early May, and those selected will be honored in Washington, D.C.
Application to the program is by invitation only. Students are chosen based on outstanding accomplishments in one of several areas: broad academic achievement; artistic excellence in the visual arts, performing arts, or creative writing; or exceptional scholarship and achievement in career and technical education fields.
Colin and Ella are among more than 100 candidates from South Carolina and thousands of students nationwide being considered for this prestigious recognition.
Established in 1964 by executive order of the President, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was created to recognize and honor some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.
Congratulations to Colin and Ella on this outstanding achievement. We are proud of the excellence they continue to represent at Spring Valley High School.

Spring Valley STUCO Celebrates National and State Honors
Spring Valley High School Student Council has much to celebrate after earning both national recognition and state conference honors for its outstanding leadership, service, and school involvement.
Spring Valley STUCO Earns National Gold Council of Excellence Award
For its exemplary record of leadership, service, and activities that make a positive impact on both the school and community, the Spring Valley High School Student Council has been recognized as a 2025 National Gold Council of Excellence by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC). The NASC program is supported by its parent organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
“The student council at Spring Valley High School just pulled off something extraordinary,” said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe. “Their student-driven change has earned them national recognition as a National Gold Council of Excellence, proving that when young people are given the chance to lead, they turn their vision into real-world impact.”
To receive this honor, a student council must meet a wide range of criteria. In addition to maintaining a written constitution, regular meetings, and a democratic election process, councils must also demonstrate successful leadership development and active service to both their school and community.
This recognition reflects the hard work, vision, and dedication of Spring Valley’s student leaders as they continue to make a lasting difference on campus and beyond.
Spring Valley STUCO Shines at State Conference
Spring Valley STUCO also had an outstanding experience at the South Carolina Association of Student Councils State Conference.
During the conference, council members had the opportunity to learn valuable ideas and leadership strategies that they can bring back to strengthen their work at Spring Valley. Several student leaders also presented workshops for their peers, sharing successful programs and initiatives that have been implemented at SVHS.
The weekend also brought several exciting accomplishments for the council. Student Body President Imani Howard was inducted into the Terry McCoy Leadership Hall of Fame, a tremendous honor that recognizes exceptional student leadership.
In addition, Spring Valley STUCO was named a Gold Honor Council and earned several top awards, including:
- 1st Place in Community Service Outreach Projects
- 2nd Place in Recognition Projects
- 2nd Place for their poster
These achievements highlight the creativity, leadership, and service-minded spirit of Spring Valley’s Student Council. Congratulations to Imani Howard and the entire SVHS STUCO for representing Spring Valley with excellence at both the national and state levels.

Discovery Students Shine at the 2026 USC Region II Science and Engineering Fair
Seventy Discovery sophomores and juniors competed in the University of South Carolina Region II Science and Engineering Fair on March 9 th, 2026. Each of these students did an outstanding job presenting his/her research to the judges from the University of South Carolina and many other professional organizations. Approximately 200 students from area high schools were interviewed by judges to determine the best of the submitted projects.
Our Spring Valley students earned 62 awards! Please see the Awards List to view all of the honors that our students earned. Congratulations to all of our students, their families, and their research teachers, Mrs. Lindsey McKenzie, Dr. Michelle Spigner, and Dr. Michelle Wyatt, on their outstanding work!
Spring Valley FBLA Shines at State Conference
Spring Valley High School’s FBLA chapter had an outstanding showing at the State Conference, held March 22–25, with several students earning top honors in their competitive events.
Congratulations to the following students for their impressive accomplishments:

- Hayden Mercado — 1st Place, Sports and Entertainment Management
- Dhruv Bavashi — 2nd Place, Public Administration and Management

We are incredibly proud of our FBLA students for representing Spring Valley so well at the state level. Their hard work, preparation, and dedication truly paid off.

Spring Valley AVID Students Participate in Field Study at the University of South Carolina School of Law
Spring Valley High School AVID students recently participated in a field study at the University of South Carolina School of Law. This was a joint field study with other Richland Two AVID program schools, giving students an opportunity to connect, learn, and explore together.
During the visit, students were able to gain valuable insight into the law school environment, college pathways, and careers in the legal profession. Experiences like this help students make meaningful connections between their academic work and their future goals.
This field study provided an important opportunity for students to expand their understanding of higher education and the many possibilities available to them after high school.
Thank you to the University of South Carolina School of Law for hosting our students and providing such a valuable learning experience.
We are proud of our AVID students for representing Spring Valley so well and for continuing to take advantage of opportunities that support their growth and future success.
Congratulations to Spring Valley Senior Jason Peay on National Scholastic Art Awards Honors
Congratulations to Spring Valley senior Jason Peay on his outstanding national recognition in the Scholastic Art Awards competition.
Jason received a National Silver Key Scholastic Award for his portfolio, along with a $2,000 scholarship. He also earned two National Gold Keys for his paintings, Jamie and Gbor.
As part of this incredible achievement, Jason has been invited to attend the national awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City this summer.
We are incredibly proud of Jason and all he has accomplished through his talent, creativity, and hard work. Congratulations on this amazing honor!

Spring Valley High School invites students, families, and community members to visit the Anne Frank Traveling Exhibit on display April 13–24, 2026.
This powerful exhibit gives visitors the opportunity to learn more about the life of Anne Frank, the history of the Holocaust, and the importance of remembrance, empathy, and education.

Fireflies Reading Program on Beanstack
Spring Valley High School is excited to participate in the Columbia Fireflies Reading Program for the 2026 season.
Through this program, students have the opportunity to strengthen their reading skills while earning a complimentary ticket, junior hot dog, and soda to a Columbia Fireflies baseball game. Families will also have the option to purchase additional tickets.
The challenge began on March 1 and ends on April 22. Students must click on the challenge in Beanstack and sign up in order to participate. Our school’s game date is Sunday, April 26.
To successfully complete the challenge, students must read for 300 minutes.
Once a student completes the challenge, Ms. Boykin will send the student and parent(s) a ticket link along with instructions for claiming the student ticket and ordering any additional tickets for family and friends.
Please note that all Reading Program tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so students should claim their tickets as soon as they complete the challenge.

The ’Brary Team would like to thank everyone who participated in our schoolwide Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) event on Wednesday through Beanstack.
As of today, 60% of our student body has logged reading minutes, which is an increase from 54% before D.E.A.R. Even more exciting, we have already surpassed our community goal of 500,000 minutes and now have an impressive 640,973 minutes logged.

Spring Valley Rotary Club Scholarship Opportunity 🎓
The Spring Valley Rotary Club will honor two graduating seniors from Spring Valley High School with a $2,500 scholarship to support their continued education.
This competitive scholarship will be awarded based on the following criteria:
- Financial need – 50%
- Scholastic achievement – 25%
- Initiative and motivation – 25%
Eligible applicants must be graduating seniors at Spring Valley High School who plan to attend an accredited institution of higher learning in the fall following graduation. This may include a technical school, junior college, business college, college, or university.
Recipients will be required to submit proof of enrollment and a copy of their enrollment bill before scholarship funds are released. Funds will be paid directly to the college or university.

Spring Valley students are invited to apply for the SC Business Week Program, hosted by the University of South Carolina Darla Moore School of Business (Columbia campus). This dynamic summer experience gives students hands-on exposure to the world of business, leadership, and entrepreneurship.
📍 Location: USC Columbia – Darla Moore School of Business
📅 Dates: July 19–24, 2026
👩🎓 Eligibility: Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors
📊 GPA Requirement: 3.0 or higher (other GPAs considered with a recommendation letter)

WORD Poetry Club to Host Open Mic for National Poetry Month
To celebrate National Poetry Month in April, Spring Valley’s WORD Poetry Club will host an Open Mic on Thursday, April 16, during lunch in C228.
Poets, writers, songwriters, and rappers are all invited to come and share their stories, creativity, and voices. Faculty and staff are also welcome to participate.
