Six Discovery Students Earn Perfect Scores for AP Research

Congratulations to Spring Valley Discovery seniors, Lillian Amick, Shrihan Ganesh Babu, Jisoo Lee, Shivani Patel, Ava Phelps, and Marina Slaubaugh, for earning perfect scores for the AP Research exam in 2023. AP Research scores are based on a 4,000-5,000 word Academic Research Paper (75%) and an oral Presentation and Defense (25%). These students not only received the top score of 5, but were also among the 357 students (amounting to just 1.26% of 2023 AP Research students) from around the world to earn every point possible on this challenging AP Capstone course. Congratulations again to these students and their AP Research teacher, Mrs. Spigner, on a job well done!

Spring Valley Education Foundation (SVEF) Instrumental in Purchasing New Autoclave

A huge thank you to the Spring Valley Education Foundation (SVEF) for a $5,000 grant that helped fund the purchase of a new autoclave. This autoclave is instrumental for many of the Discovery students’ research projects as well as any biology labs requiring sterile equipment. Our previous autoclave, which lasted 16+ years, quit functioning back in January 2023. Research projects are underway for the 2024 USC Region II Science and Engineering Fair as well as the South Carolina Junior Academy of Science competition. Join us at the Discovery Research Symposium at Spring Valley High School on March 2nd, 2024, at 8 am to see some outstanding presentations!

FIERCE PIE IN THE FACE SHOWDOWN

Key Club Week

This week is Key Club Week. Key Club Week is to show the community what Key Club is all about: service. Members will be showing their pride by wearing their Key Club shirts, changing their profile pictures, and sharing what they love about Key Club on social media. They will also be spreading positivity through random acts of kindness and participating in the Yellow Tulip Project to raise awareness and smash the stigma around mental illness. Of course, we couldn’t do Key Club without the support of our teachers, admin, and staff. Throughout the week, keys with staff members’ names will be by the first floor elevators for anyone to write kind and supportive messages on. We encourage you to join in and celebrate Key Club Week with us!

Yellow Tulip Project

As a part of Key Club Week, Key Club is participating in the Yellow Tulip Project! The Yellow Tulip Project helps raise awareness and smash the stigma around mental illness. Paper tulips will be sold in the commons for $1 from 11/7-11/9 during lunch and before school on 11/8. You can support by buying a bulb in your name or a friend’s and by using the hashtag #HelpHopeHappen!
