CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NATIONAL MERIT FINALISTS

Richland School District Two students have been named finalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship (NSMSC) program.
Spring Valley High School seniors Scott Dillon, Angel Huang, Zachary Huang, Christopher Li, Elizabeth McCallum and Pranav Poola are among the approximately 15,000 finalists announced by NMSC. These academically talented high school students move on to compete for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $32 million that will be offered next spring. We are delighted to have the opportunity to congratulate these outstanding students and celebrate their advancement as Finalists.
Types of Merit Scholarship® Awards
Beginning in March and continuing to mid-June, NMSC notifies approximately 7,500 Finalists at their home addresses that they have been selected to receive a Merit Scholarship® award. Merit Scholarship awards are of three types:
- National Merit® $2500 Scholarships
Every Finalist competes for these single payment scholarships, which are awarded on a state representational basis. Winners are selected without consideration of family financial circumstances, college choice, or major and career plans. - Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards
Corporate sponsors designate their awards for children of their employees or members, for residents of a community where a company has operations, or for Finalists with career plans the sponsor wishes to encourage. These scholarships may either be renewable for four years of undergraduate study or one-time awards. - College-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards
Officials of each sponsor college select winners of their awards from Finalists who have been accepted for admission and have informed NMSC by the published deadlines that the sponsor college or university is their first choice. These awards are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study. The published deadlines for reporting a sponsor college as first choice can be viewed on page 3 of the Requirements and Instructions for Semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit®Scholarship Program. (Adobe Acrobat Reader is required.)
Merit Scholarship awards are supported by some 420 independent sponsors and by NMSC’s own funds. Sponsor organizations include corporations and businesses, company foundations, professional associations, and colleges and universities.NMSC, a non-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 420 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.

COVID UPDATE

Richland Two sent out an update for employees and parents with information on the district’s updated isolation and quarantine procedures for schools released by S.C. DHEC on December 31, 2021. We encourage you to thoroughly review this information by looking at the Covid-19 Update Newsletter. One important point to note in this update is related to students having to quarantine if they are identified as a close contact. The below statement from this update outlines that if you are 16 years of age or older, you must have the initial vaccination series and the booster to avoid having to quarantine if considered a close contact. Please review the Covid-19 Update Newsletter for complete details about this and other changes.
- To avoid quarantine when identified as a close contact you must have received the vaccine doses you’re eligible for (completed initial vaccination series and booster for ages 16 and up, or completed initial vaccination series for ages 5-15).
Questions about your child being Covid-19 positive or is a close contact of someone who is Covid-19 positive, please contact our school nurse Elisabeth Walter at ewalter@richland2.org or by calling the Health Room at ext. 69092
Sparkleberry Lane Construction

We wanted to let all of our families know that we will be experiencing some traffic issues on Sparkleberry Lane in front of the school over the next 2-3 months. Richland County will be making updates to the gas lines, storm drains, and adding sidewalks. Work crews will do their best to minimize the impact to arrival and departure times at school. If you are a car rider or student driver, we strongly encourage you to arrive early to school to make sure you are on time for class.
After School Tutoring

We will offer both on-campus and virtual tutoring options this year. Offering both platforms allows us to provide more options for students to get academic assistance after school. Please visit the SVHS Tutoring website for a complete schedule of the tutoring opportunities.
A special thank you goes out to the Spring Valley Education Foundation for funding this important initiative.
