SVHS PEP: “AVID Mini-Conference“ Collaborative Structures: Increasing Levels of Inquiry and Rigor
On Wednesday, November 20th, SV teachers took part in the AVID Mini-Conference titled “Supporting Student Learning & Engagement through AVID”.
AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, plays a vital role in enhancing student learning and engagement by offering a robust framework.
The program empowers students by encouraging them to take charge of their academic success through strategies such as effective note-taking, inquiry-based learning, and peer tutoring.
During PEP, teachers engaged in an insightful presentation led by Mr. Jeffrey McMicken, Richland Two Coordinator of AVID, and Mrs. Dawne Whitley, AVID Liaison. The session covered a variety of topics, including group norms, mindset for learning, and collaborative strategies.
Teachers also had the opportunity to participate in interactive group activities designed to get them moving, sharing ideas, and learning from one another. The conference highlighted the importance of collaboration—not just for students, but for educators as well—in building a culture of inquiry and rigor across Spring Valley.

Spring Valley Librarian Helps Organize Soda City Poetry Festival 🎤📚
Check out the video above from the Soda City Poetry Festival, an inspiring event organized this summer with the help of our very own Spring Valley Librarian, Mrs. Jennifer Bartell Boykin.
Mrs. Boykin, who serves as the Poet Laureate of the City of Columbia, is also an advisor for our WORD (Write. Organize. Read. Dream) Club and the YOLO (Youth Literacy Organization) Club. Through her leadership and passion for the literary arts, she continues to create opportunities for students to explore their voices and connect with the power of poetry.
We are proud to celebrate her contributions to both Spring Valley and the Columbia community!

🌟 Spring Valley High School Teacher & Staff of the Month Nominations

Each month, we celebrate one Teacher of the Month and one Staff Member of the Month based on a special theme. Students, Parents, and Staff can nominate! Please tell us who you’re nominating and why they fit this month’s theme. Form will close on October 24th.
October – Biggest Team Player
