December 22nd Viking Update Post

Winter Break

Spring Valley High School and all Richland School District Two Schools and Centers, will be closed December 23rd through January 1st. Enjoy the winter break!

Spring Valley Winter Days 2020 “The Giving Tree”

Winter Days is a Spring Valley tradition dating back to 1984 and is the largest annual school-wide community outreach project at Spring Valley High School. The project consists of various charitable drives that benefit a number of local community agencies. Committee chairs survey agency needs, set collection goals, and begins the challenge of coordinating this large effort.

The theme this year is “The Giving Tree” as Spring Valley celebrates our 36th Winter Days and 36 years of giving back to our community. The theme represents the intention of giving.

Although we may collect physical items to donate, what we really hope to give to others through Winter Days is the knowledge that they are recognized and remembered during the holiday season. We want to highlight that the gift worth giving is the hope and love that accompanies the physical donations.

Congratulations to Trey Peterson & John Javis

Congratulations to Trey Peterson and John Javis on being named to the 2020 South Carolina Shrine Bowl team. A great accomplishment by two incredible viking student-athletes. Thank you for representing #TheValley

SHOW US WHAT YOU KNOW!

Students currently enrolled in a End-of-Course (EOC) class (Algebra 1- semester block classes only (including Intermediate Algebra), Biology 1, English 2- semester block classes only, and U.S. History and Constitution) will participate in the state mandated EOC exam at the conclusion of the semester.  This year the EOC exams will count 20% of the final semester grade only if the exam score helps to improve the students’ overall grade. If the EOC exam does not improve a student’s grade then it will not be included in the calculation of the final grade.

Spring Valley will be hosting EOC preparation events, more information about those events will be sent out in January. For more information about EOCs and Semester 1 exams, please visit our Semester 1 Exam Information website. We encourage all of our students Show Us What You Know on your EOC exams!

Help Grant A Kid’s Wish Today

Would you like to help make a child’s wish come true? This holiday season, Discovery senior Aisha Siddique is raising money for the Make-A-Wish foundation! In the past, her work in community service and fundraising has included participation in the school’s Key Club, raising money for the UNRWA Gather for Gaza Fund, working as a junior volunteer at Prisma Health, and making masks for health professionals and patients at the Prisma Health Children’s Hospital.

During her freshman and sophomore years, she worked in multiple areas taking care of patients with different illnesses. The atmosphere in a hospital setting is always a bit grim, but it was completely different in the children’s hospital. She found myself entranced by the cheerful environment despite medical professionals trying their best to cure children of their life-threatening diseases. During her time there, she was fortunate enough to work in the cancer division of the Children’s hospital, spend time with those suffering from these illnesses, build friendships that will last a life-time, and learn important lessons along the way. The strength of the children suffering from these diseases is unimaginable and inspiring, and they have inspired Aisha to want to do more for them. Now, Aisha would like to do her part and help bring a bit of joy and happiness to them during the holiday season. Especially with COVID-19 impacting the course of this year, it is now more important than ever to give back to her community and the amazing people she has met along the way. Please consider donating at tinyurl.com/aisha-wd or scan the QR code on the flyer attached! Happy Holidays to all fellow Vikings!

Thank you!! Aisha Siddique
