General information about senior pictures:

  • All seniors will take a formal picture in either a tuxedo or velvet drape (all of these pieces are provided for students).
  • Students may bring school-appropriate props for casual pictures (sports equipment, instrument, etc). This is completely optional.

 Youth Conservation Poster Contest

L-R (Sophia Hinson and Sarah Hernandez)

Columbia, SC – Twenty students will receive awards in this year’s Youth Conservation Poster Contest sponsored by the Richland Soil and Water Conservation District (RSWCD). Student posters addressed the topic “Healthy Soils: Healthy Life,” raising awareness about how soil serves as the foundation for many items we use in our daily lives, such as food, clothing, clean water, homes, and more. Healthy people need healthy ecosystems, and healthy ecosystems rely on healthy soil!

This year’s winners are:

7th-9th Grades:

First place: Sarah Hernandez, Spring Valley High School

Honorable Mention: Sophia Hinson, Spring Valley High School

Winners will receive cash prices, and four entries will progress to the state competition sponsored by the South Carolina Association of Conservation Districts. 111 students across 9 schools submitted entries to this year’s contest. Additionally, RSWCD provided 27 classroom education programs for nearly 500 students on the topics of soil science and soil conservation in the 2021-2022 school year to help students explore the poster contest theme.

The Youth Conservation Poster Contest is an annual education program hosted by the RSWCD with support from the South Carolina and National Associations of Conservation Districts.  For more information about this or other conservation education programs, contact Chanda Cooper at cooper.chanda@richlandcountysc.gov.

On Saturday, May 21st, Discovery and Explorations students (and parents) picked up litter from Two Notch Road between Sparkleberry Lane and Clemson Road. The magnet programs adopted this stretch of road in August of 2021 in an effort to help beautify our community. This past Saturday was the third quarterly pick-up and resulted in 15 bags of trash being removed. Students who participated included Brayden Dalton, Benjamin Davis, Anagha Gowda, Talha Islam, Arnav Jani, Bryan Lee, Jake McGee, William David Smith, Mason Snyder, Reagan Richardson, and Colin Tang. A huge thank you to all who volunteered!!

Vikings Ultimate Frisbee Team Earns Second Place in State Tournament

The Vikings Ultimate team played in the 2022 SC High School State Ultimate Championship Tournament this past weekend in Chapin, SC. Spring Valley ended pool play seeded 2nd with great wins over Academic Magnet, Carolina Forest, and AC Flora. The Vikings met AC Flora again in the semi-finals in a very hard-fought match by both teams. After going down 3-7, Spring Valley came back to tie it 7-7. In the second half, AC Flora had 3 game points but the Vikings battled back to tie the game again 11-11 to force sudden death. The nail-biting last point ended with an amazing win by the Vikings! Spring Valley faced off against Dreher in the final championship game but time ran out for the Vikings and Dreher won 12-10 to win the State title. Spring Valley took 2nd place overall, which is an amazing result for their first time playing in the State Tournament! The tournament team consisted of:

Seniors: Drew Boysia, Scott Dillon, Rhett Moore, Shreya Thiagu, Blake Wild Juniors: Aidan Anthony, Carson Aycock, Justin Kong, Kameron Morgan Sophomores: Caleb Anthony, Josh Offutt, Patrick Quirk, Sammy Urs Freshmen: Lee Dillon, Ella Gillam, Krish Patel Coaches: Tae Ho, Ethan Ho

Discovery Sophomore Lily Zhang Named the 2022 South Carolina Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) State Winner

The SJWP is the world’s most prestigious award presented to a high school student for a water-research project. The Water Environment Federation (WEF) has coordinated the U.S. competition since its inception in 1997 and partners closely with their Member Associations (MAs) to execute the program. The competition among state winners is held in June in order to send the national winner to the international competition in late August. It is open to public, private, or independent high school students in grades 9-12 who have reached the age of 15 by Aug. 1 of the competition year and have conducted water-related science projects. Judging criteria are the same as the international competition and include ratings for relevance, methodology, subject knowledge, practical skills, creativity and paper/presentation. The Water Environment Association of South Carolina has selected Lily Zhang as the state winner and is fully sponsoring her travel to the national SJWP competition at the Colorado School of Mines in Denver, Colorado from June 16-19, 2022. Lily will be submitting her research paper and presenting her research on “The Individual and Combined Effects of Microplastics
and Acetominophen on the Heart Rate and Survival Daphnia magna.” Congratulations to Lily and her research teacher, Dr. Michelle Wyatt!
