October is Principal Appreciation Month! 💚💛

This month, we celebrate Principal Appreciation Month and honor our incredible leader, Mr. Jeff Temoney. His dedication, vision, and commitment to the success of every Viking make a lasting impact on our school community each and every day.

Here are a few simple ways you can show your appreciation for our principal this month:

Let’s come together as Viking Nation to celebrate Mr. Temoney and all that he does to make Spring Valley a place where students and staff thrive. Thank you, Mr. Temoney, for your leadership and dedication!

Charleston Southern University Performs at Spring Valley 🎶💚💛

We were excited to welcome the Charleston Southern University Wind Ensemble and Marching Band to Spring Valley today! CSU shared a free concert with our symphonic and concert band students, highlighting what music programs look like at the collegiate level.

This performance provided our students with an excellent educational opportunity—one that they might not otherwise experience. Spring Valley proudly hosted the event in our auditorium, and our Vikings enjoyed every moment of the music and learning.

A special thank you to Mr. Christopher McGee, our band director, Dr. Marshall Forester, Charleston Southern University’s band director, and Mr. Jeff Temoney, our principal, for making this opportunity possible for our students.

Learning to Use AI Ethically with Mrs. Boykin 🤖📚

This week, Mrs. Jennifer Boykin, SVHS Librarian, visited Ms. Tracy Watson’s English classroom to lead an incredible lesson on the ethical use of AI. Her engaging presentation had students actively participating through role-play skits she created, thoughtful discussions, and insightful questions. Ms. Watson even found herself joining in alongside the students!

Mrs. Boykin shared a wealth of knowledge on how to use AI with integrity and fidelity, guiding students as they worked together to create their own AI Code of Honor for the classroom.

A special thank you to Mrs. Boykin and Ms. Watson for creating such an engaging and meaningful learning opportunity for our Vikings! 💚💛

AVID Scholars in Action ✏️📚

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, our AVID Scholars participate in structured tutorials designed to sharpen their skills and deepen their learning. In these sessions, students bring points of confusion from their content-area classes and collaborate in small groups with trained tutors to develop a deeper understanding—rather than simply getting answers.

We are grateful to have had Spring Valley teachers Rodney Wilson (Math) and Drew Bozard (Spanish) join in to support tutorials, along with our dedicated tutor Heather Alexander (Science). Their guidance has been a huge benefit to our scholars, who truly appreciate the extra support.

In the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, tutorials follow a structured, student-led process that includes the inquiry method, Costa’s Levels of Thinking, and the Tutorial Request Form (TRF). This process challenges students to ask deeper questions, build problem-solving skills, and engage in collaborative learning.

A special thank you to these teachers for lending their expertise and to our AVID teacher, Dr. Harriford-Platt (formerly an English teacher), for her ongoing leadership and support of our scholars.
