WINTER BREAK

WINTER DAYS – HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS RECAP

Winter Days is a Spring Valley tradition dating back to 1984 and is the largest annual school-wide community outreach project at Spring Valley High School. The project consists of various charitable drives that benefit a number of local community agencies. Committee chairs survey agency needs, set collection goals, and begins the challenge of coordinating this large effort.

”Home for the Holiday’s” as Spring Valley celebrates our 37th Winter Days and 37 years of giving back to our community.  The theme represents us coming back together collectively after going through a national pandemic. Although we may collect physical items to donate, what we really hope to give to others through Winter Days is the knowledge that they are recognized and remembered during the holiday season.

PLEASE CLICK HERE TO VIEW OUR WINTER DAYS 2021 ASSEMBLY.

Congratulations to Ky Tayo!

Congratulations to Ky Tayo and his family who are seeing a dream become a reality. Ky seized the opportunity to continue his academic and athletic career on the collegiate level. He will be joining Spring Valley Alumni Anthony Wilson on the campus of Georgia Southern. Fellow classmates, teachers, coaches, staff, and family members filled the auditorium at Spring Valley for his signing ceremony. We wish him continued success during his collegiate career.

December 2nd Viking Update

Spring Valley Students Support Tree-Planting Efforts

Students in Spring Valley High School’s Adopt-a-Stream Club recently completed a litter cleanup in cooperation with the Congaree Riverkeeper. With support from a Conservation Education Mini-Grant, students’ next efforts will include planting trees to protect and improve water, air and soil quality on Spring Valley’s campus.

This winter Spring Valley students plant trees thanks to Conservation Education Mini-Grants from Richland Soil and Water Conservation District. The students’ efforts come as South Carolina prepares to observe Arbor Day on Friday, Dec. 3. Founded in 1872, Arbor Day encourages individuals and groups to plant trees, which benefit air, water and wildlife and provide natural beauty. While the holiday is celebrated nationally in April, South Carolina observes the holiday in December, as it is a better time for planting trees in the state’s climate.

By planting trees on campus, students in Spring Valley High’s Adopt-a-Stream club aim to benefit the Earth and its inhabitants.

“Planting trees helps our ecosystem,” said Ian Saracila, Adopt-a-Stream club student president. “Trees reduce the amount of stormwater runoff, which may reduce erosion. They are also beautiful, and they offer us their shade.”

The club’s efforts will be supported by a $250 Conservation Education Mini-Grant.

About the Program

Conservation Education Mini-Grants are offered to Richland County K-12 educational institutions twice each school year in amounts of up to $1,000. The next application deadline is Feb. 4, 2022.

For more information and application details, visit www.richlandcountysc.gov/rswcd or email Chanda Cooper at cooper.chanda@richlandcountysc.gov.

Congratulations Angelina Cain!

Congratulations to Spring Valley student Angelina Cain on being designated as a College Board National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar. Based on her remarkable academic achievements and outstanding performance on the PSAT and/or AP.

The College Board, which administers the PSAT and SAT among its activities, recognizes academic excellence through its National Recognition Programs. Students selected for this prestigious honor can cite it on their college and scholarship applications. In turn, colleges use the listing of this honor as a way of identifying students from underrepresented groups—i.e., ethnic minorities and/or those who attend school in rural areas or small towns—who have excelled on their PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or AP Exams and in their classwork. We encourage you to share this accomplishment by using the press release template, sample tweets, and sample newsletter content (.docx). Please feel free to contact the College Board for support with distribution at communications@collegeboard.org.
