November 19th Viking Update

Parent University Virtual Session for Freshmen 

Mark your calendars and plan to attend the Parent University Virtual Session for Freshmen Thursday, December 2, 2021, from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm.

The freshmen classroom registration sessions with Mrs. Spain will begin December 6, 2021. In addition to learning more about your child’s graduation status and discussing their future plans, take advantage of this virtual session which is being offered by the College and Career Center (CCC). We will introduce the importance of the 10 ten-point grading scale and how every point matters, review a sample high school transcript, provide tutorial resources for our students, and discuss the credits needed for continued promotion. We will also share our expertise on ACT/SAT and ASVAB testing along with optimizing the Naviance college and career platform.

Celebrating National Career Development Week!

November is national career development month. Established by the National Career Development Agency, the month-long awareness campaign encourages career development professionals to celebrate career development. We at Spring Valley want to take this time to celebrate our Career Development Facilitators.

You may not know that at Spring Valley has 2 Career Development Facilitators: Mrs. Hilary Dickerson and Mrs.Valerie Wright. They work alongside our school counselors, college specialist, and work based learning coordinator to help students learn about the 16 career clusters, the changing job market, and how to prepare for their future career. 

In the College and Career Center, they offer:

Career Assessments for every grade
Help with resumes
Work with students interested in military or going straight to work after high school
Help prep students for interviews
Help complete applications
Host community partners to discuss different industries in the Midlands

FIERCE “Thanksgiving Baskets of Blessings”

On, November 18th, the F.I.E.R.C.E Spring Valley Female mentoring group gave back by preparing ten baskets filled with everything needed for a complete Thanksgiving meal. F.I.E.R.C.E provided turkeys and baskets of food to needy families in our community. We want to give a big thank you to everyone who donated to our school fundraiser. With all the funds we were able to raise we will be able to have a spring community service project to give more to our community. From our FIERCE Spring Valley Family we want to wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

November 18th Viking Update

FIERCE “Thanksgiving Baskets of Blessings”

On, November 18th, the F.I.E.R.C.E Spring Valley Female mentoring group gave back by preparing ten baskets filled with everything needed for a complete Thanksgiving meal. F.I.E.R.C.E provided turkeys and baskets of food to needy families in our community. We want to give a big thank you to everyone who donated to our school fundraiser. 2021 Newberry College Honor Orchestra Members

Congratulations to the following SVHS orchestra members! They were selected to participate in the Newberry College Honor Orchestra.

This three-day event includes rehearsals and masterclasses with the Newberry College string faculty; and opportunities to attend performances by Newberry College music students and faculty. The weekend will conclude with a concert by the Honor Orchestra.

The event takes place on December 2-4, 2021, at Newberry College. The culminating performance takes place on December 4th, at 2:00 pm.

Thank you for your support of the SVHS Orchestra program.

Congratulations to Spring Valley’s Competitive Cheer program who qualified for State for the 3RD STRAIGHT YEAR!!!! They came in 5th out of 32 teams across the state. This is an amazing accomplishment. Go Vikings!

Are you interested in or considering a career as a computer programmer? 

Are you willing to consider a non-traditional college pathway? 

If you answered yes to both of those questions, please come to an information meeting on Wednesday, November 17 at lunch to learn more about CREATE OPPORTUNITY COLUMBIA!  The goal of Create Opportunity Columbia (CO Cola) is to “Find, train, and employ quality computer programmers to meet the growing needs of the industry in the Midlands. You MUST be 18 by Summer 2022 to participate.

Quick Program Information and what to expect:

Screening/Virtual Assessment-90-minute aptitude test will be taken at SV. The assessment focuses on innate thinking patterns and not on exposure to programming or coding experience. (14-18% of people are “wired” this way, are you?)

Interview-Those who pass will be interviewed by CO Cola to assess the desire to be part of this industry. This will be a real interview, so preparation is key!

Training–Six-month program at MTC, with cohorts beginning in July/August with a self-paced module to finish in the spring.**What you can expect in the program: M-Th: 9:00-4:30; F-9:00-1:30**

Apprenticeship–Two-year paid apprenticeship (starting at $40,000 with retirement and benefits) along with a personal mentor to work with you throughout your apprenticeship.

The outcome-Placed as Middle-Level Programmer and salary is increased to current market salary (Currently the salary ranges from $60-80K)

Discovery and Explorations Students Adopt-a-Highway

On Saturday, November 6th, twenty-seven Discovery and Explorations students along with nine parents braved the cold and wind to clean up litter from Two Notch Road between Sparkleberry Lane and Clemson Road. The magnet programs recently adopted this stretch of road in an effort to help beautify our community. Students and parents collected 32 bags of litter and returned 5 grocery carts to their appropriate location. Students who participated included Max Berg, Ayana Canty, Srihith Chada, Evelyn Contreras Tovar, Troy Evans, Mary Ann Gardiner, Anagha Gowda, Madison Han, Hamilton Howard, Arnav Jani, Abbey Lee, Cyndy Martinez-Garcia, Jake McGee, Trisha Nambiar, Satvik Nelakuditi, Fionn O’Connor, Stephen O’Connor, Michael Papaletsos, Caleb Phillips, Leilani Thomas, Libby Thompson, Simran Tippabhatla, Victoria-Grace Tuten, Nathaniel Uhrig, James Washington, Tyler Wilson, and Lucas Wyatt. A huge thank you to all who volunteered!!

The junior conferences with the school counselors will begin on December 6, 2021. In addition to learning more about your child’s graduation status and discussing their future plans, take advantage of this virtual session which is being offered by the College and Career Center (CCC). We will introduce the importance of the college search and college visitation process, review the criteria for state-subsidized scholarships, present useful tips on developing winning essays, and provide best practices for writing attention-grabbing resumes. We will also share our expertise on ACT/SAT and ASVAB testing along with optimizing the Naviance college and career platform.

Who is your favorite Teacher & Support Staff Employee of The Month? Please take a moment to fill out the November nomination form that was emailed to students and parents. This November we are voting for your favorite Math Teacher and Support Staff (Main Office). Voting will end on November 19th at 4:00 pm. The winner for each month will be selected and announced at the designated time. Please note that your nomination letter will be shared with the teacher and classified employee selected.

CAREER CONVERSATION “COMPUTER PROGRAMMER”

Are you interested in or considering a career as a computer programmer? 

Are you willing to consider a non-traditional college pathway? 

If you answered yes to both of those questions, please come to an information meeting on Wednesday, November 17 at lunch to learn more about CREATE OPPORTUNITY COLUMBIA!  The goal of Create Opportunity Columbia (CO Cola) is to “Find, train, and employ quality computer programmers to meet the growing needs of the industry in the Midlands. You MUST be 18 by Summer 2022 to participate.

Quick Program Information and what to expect:

Screening/Virtual Assessment-90-minute aptitude test will be taken at SV. The assessment focuses on innate thinking patterns and not on exposure to programming or coding experience. (14-18% of people are “wired” this way, are you?)

Interview-Those who pass will be interviewed by CO Cola to assess the desire to be part of this industry. This will be a real interview, so preparation is key!

Training–Six-month program at MTC, with cohorts beginning in July/August with a self-paced module to finish in the spring.**What you can expect in the program: M-Th: 9:00-4:30; F-9:00-1:30**

Apprenticeship–Two-year paid apprenticeship (starting at $40,000 with retirement and benefits) along with a personal mentor to work with you throughout your apprenticeship.

The outcome-Placed as Middle-Level Programmer and salary is increased to current market salary (Currently the salary ranges from $60-80K)

Parent University Virtual Session for Juniors

Mark your calendars and plan to attend the Parent University Virtual Session for Juniors on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm.

The junior conferences with the school counselors will begin on December 6, 2021. In addition to learning more about your child’s graduation status and discussing their future plans, take advantage of this virtual session which is being offered by the College and Career Center (CCC). We will introduce the importance of the college search and college visitation process, review the criteria for state-subsidized scholarships, present useful tips on developing winning essays, and provide best practices for writing attention-grabbing resumes. We will also share our expertise on ACT/SAT and ASVAB testing along with optimizing the Naviance college and career platform.

Congratulations to Cydney Cooper and her family who are seeing a dream become reality.
