Viking Update Post

May 28th Viking Update

Congratulations to Mrs. Venesia Johnson

Congratulations to our Spring Valley High School social worker, Mrs. Venesia Johnson. She was recently recognized through her work with USC College of Social Work. Mrs. Johnson an alum of USC received the Master of Social Work Field Instructor of the Year Award. She was nominated by MSW graduate Raven Martin.

“I am grateful and truly humbled. It is my belief that it takes a team and collaboration to truly be successful, and it is great to be a part of a team that continually produces competent social workers who are grounded in maintaining their ethics,” Johnson says. “I am honored to be a part of that process. Being such an important part of a students’ educational journey truly makes me feel eager to continue to serve in the role of field instructor.”

According to Johnson, the most satisfying part of being a field instructor and working with students is growing and learning from one another.

“I am always excited when a student shares something new that they have learned in class, and we are able to put it into practice,” Johnson says. “It is my belief that learning is a two-way process, and I am always zealous not to only share my knowledge, but to learn from others around me. I am confident that once a student leaves their placement, that they are ready to make a change and be successful in their future professional roles.”

Field instructors at the College of Social Work provide on-site supervision, advisement, and instruction to BSW and MSW students in the field practicum and promote their development of social work skills, abilities, values, and ethics.

Congratulations 2021 Boy’s Track & Field State Champions

Graduating SENIOR Procedures for Turning in Chromebooks

*Underclassmen will keep Chromebooks through the summer and will bring them back when school starts.

Prior to turning your Chromebook in you must do the following:

  1. Sign out, remove users, shut down the Chromebook, and charge it COMPLETELY.
  2. Remove from case and gently wipe down Chromebook.

(DO NOT bring your case. We do not want it and won’t take it.)

  1. Find your charger and wrap it up appropriately. Wrap your charger like this.

NOTE: If you do not bring your charger, you will be charged $25.00. We will only take your charger WITH your Chromebook. You cannot turn in a Chromebook one day and a charger another day. We will not reverse fees later. Insurance does not cover lost chargers.

Are you a senior with a Wifi Hotspot? If so, you will need to turn it in with your Chromebook or a $50 charge will be added to your fees. Make sure that it has the cord and hotspot included. Missing parts will be added to fees accordingly.

Important Considerations

*If you still need your Chromebook to complete assignments like AP exams, credit recovery, etc., DO NOT turn your Chromebook in until they are finished. We can’t give a Chromebook back to you after you return it.

**If you do not turn in your Chromebook by the last designated day, you will  be charged $350.00. (If you need your Chromebook for summer school and want to turn it in later, we can work with you.)

The 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program.

National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.

These Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the Finalists and their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects, studied and grades earned; scores from the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®); contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the Finalist, and a recommendation written by a high school official.

NMSC finances most of these single-payment National Merit $2500 Scholarships. Corporations and company foundations that sponsor awards through NMSC also help underwrite these scholarships with grants they provide in lieu of paying administrative fees. Scholars may use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university. 2020 National Merit Scholarship Competition This year’s National Merit Scholarship Program began in October 2018 when over 1.5 a million juniors in approximately 21,000 high schools took the PSAT/NMSQT, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

Last fall, the highest-scoring participants in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named Semifinalists on a state-representational basis. Only these 16,000 Semifinalists had an opportunity to continue in the competition. From the Semifinalist group, some 15,000 students met the very high academic standards and other requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. By the conclusion of the 2020 program, about 7,600 Finalists will have earned the “Merit Scholar” title and received a total of over $30 million in college scholarships. NMSC, a not-for-profit corporation that operates without government assistance, was founded in 1955 specifically to conduct the National Merit Scholarship Program. The majority of scholarships offered each year are underwritten by approximately 400 independent corporate and college sponsors that share NMSC’s goals of honoring scholastically talented youth and encouraging academic excellence at all levels of education.
