Viking Update Post

April 27th Viking Update

U.S. News & World Report Ranks Spring Valley in the Top 25 High Schools

This year the U.S. News & World Report ranks Spring Valley in the top 25 high schools out of the 243 high schools in the state of SC. Here is Spring Valley’s updated U.S. News profile page, with details about its rankings: https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/south-carolina/districts/richland-02/spring-valley-high-17710.

“Families can use the Best High Schools rankings to see how schools compare at the national, state and local level on factors like graduation rates and college readiness,” said Anita Narayan, managing editor of Education at U.S. News. “The rankings also provide insight into academic performance among underserved groups.”

The methodology focuses on six factors: college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rates. College readiness specifically measures participation and performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams. The data used in this edition is from the 2018-2019 academic school year, and therefore was not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alongside the national rankings, U.S. News published rankings at the state, metro area and school district levels. Only metro areas and school districts with three or more high schools were included in these subrankings.

The Best High Schools rankings are available exclusively on USNews.com and include data on a variety of factors, such as enrollment, student diversity, participation in free and reduced-price lunch programs, graduation rates and the results of state assessments. U.S. News worked with RTI International, a global research firm, to implement the comprehensive ranking methodology. For more information, visit Facebook and Twitter using #BestHighSchools.

Congratulations Nemisa Samanthapudi!

Dilley-Wilson Changemaker Scholarship

Dilley – Wilson Changemaker Scholarship

Scholarship Excerpt

This scholarship was created by a 2016 graduate, Taylor Ramsue, to honor two teachers that changed her life during her time at Spring Valley High School.

Mrs. Regina Dilley and Mr. Rodney Wilson are true examples of leaders who are passionate about teaching the next generation. They have both dedicated their lives to helping in and outside of the classroom, extending a helping hand without ever receiving recognition or expecting a thank you. Mrs. Dilley and Mr. Wilson helped to change the trajectory of Taylor’s life through their knowledge, kindness, and compassion. Every student should be able to experience teachers such as Mrs. Dilley and Mr. Wilson because they are the change that we all want to see. They continue to sow into the lives of their students daily while cultivating new ways to show their passion for teaching.

This scholarship is Taylor’s way of honoring two teachers that aided immensely in her growth and success. More importantly, to honor Mrs. Dilley and Mr. Wilson while they are still serving at Spring Valley. They both deserve their flowers while they can still smell them.

As a parent, the reality of paying for college becomes more and more real each year. Currently, the College Board reports that a “moderate” college budget for an in-state public college averaged $24,061 per year. A moderate budget at a private college averaged $47,831 per year. Yikes! We hope you will join us for our 30-minute sessions from 6-6:30 p.m. Here’s the registration link please see the flyer above.
